Ilhan Ataman was the wife of Ibrahim Tufan Ataman, a member of the Supreme Court. Ibrahim Tufan was among the 3,000 judges and prosecutors arrested in one day. In order to pave the way for the unlawfulness that the regime will commit after the coup, the regime put the rightful members of the judiciary (unbiased or leftist or rightist or liberal or Gulenist or with no particular view), which they thought could prevent the illegalities, on the target board. As a result, Mrs Ataman, who had cancer from her sadness, passed away without seeing her imprisoned husband for the last time.
During the early hours of July 16, the next day after the so-called coup, nearly 3,000 judges and prosecutors were detained and arrested. In order to pave the way for the unlawfulness that the regime will commit after the coup, they put the members of the judiciary, which they thought could prevent the illegalities, on the target board. They detained and arrested all lawyers and judges, Gulenist or not, who were truthful and would only take orders from the law and not consider the government’s orders above the law.
Turkey’s leading human rights defender Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu shared a tweet on December 19 2018, that the release motions of Ibrahim Tufan Ataman, a member of the Court of Cassation under arrest were declined throughout the 2.5 years. Mr Ataman requested release from jail, citing that his wife, who had cancer, was under severe disease and on the verge of death.
His request was accepted after his wife lost her consciousness. Unfortunately, Mr Ataman was released on December 13, 2018, and his beloved wife Ilhan Ataman passed away on December 19, 2018.
Gergerlioglu shared the drama on his social media account, as follows:
“Not convinced, release on the deathbed… Ilhan ATAMAN, the wife of İbrahim Tufan ATAMAN, a member of the Court of Cassation (Yargitay) under arrest, passed away yesterday. Although his wife was seriously ill, he had not been released for months. Finally, he was released after she lost her consciousness and was taken into intensive care, but it was too late.”
