Hıdır Calka, a father of 2 and who taught at Badr Turk High School in Mogadishu, was a 36-year-old Mathematics teacher. He graduated from Abant Izzet Baysal University. After serving in Kenya for 8 years, he went to Somalia. He has been in Somalia for 6 months. He died in a terrorist attack.

6 People died along with Calka in the terrorist attack. One of them, Kemale Ismailova, was teaching Turkish. On security grounds, ambulance plane wasn’t sent to Somalia to receive the wounded and their funerals   They were brought on a scheduled flight. 

Hıdır Calka, an education volunteer, has been teaching mathematics as an expatriate for 10 years. When he left Kenya for Somalia, which is dominated by civil war, terror and poverty, he had only 3 suitcases, his wife and 2 children with him. Azerbaijani citizen Kemale Ismailova also voluntarily taught Turkish in Turkish schools. She left for Somalia in September with her two children. Terrorists rained bullets on the service vehicle of a Turkish school on March 30, 2016. Calka, who has been teaching as an expatriate for 10 years, was very loved by her students. The devoted teacher was stationed in Kenya before Somalia. At his request, he took his children, who were 6 and 2 years old, and his wife, and started working as an Assistant Principal at the Qibla Numa Girls’ High School in the capital Mogadishu.

Ismailova and Calka, the teachers of the Turkish school, were martyred in the attack. Unaware that Ismailova was dead, 2 children were wounded by bullets as a target. 5 People were injured after the attack, which also killed the driver, translator and a soldier. The martyred teachers left behind 4 orphaned children and a legacy full of sacrifices that will never be forgotten.

Kenyan teacher Adriana (Fadima) was also killed in the attack

While conducting a witch hunt in Turkey, only a message of condemnation had come from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the attack on the school’s service van in the capital Mogadishu. It is not yet clear who carried out the attack. Ali Omar Salim, driver, mathematics teacher Hıdır Calka and Turkish teacher Kemale Ismailova, Isa Haji, an interpreter, and Mohammed Ahmed, who was serving in the military, were killed in the attack. Turkish teacher Merve Alkılıc, students Mirza Dakni, brothers Nihat and Nejat Ismailov, and English teacher Adriana Omama were the names of the injured in the attack.

Witnesses of the incident related to the bloody attack said: “The vehicle moving from Qibla Numa Girls High School in Omalia was going to Badr Turk High School. There were 11 people in the vehicle. 5 Minutes after the car left school, the gray passenger van coming from the opposite direction cut off the path of our car as it was going along the route it uses every day. Intense fire was fired from the vehicle coming from the back of the van into the service vehicle. As a result of the attack, 5 people died at the scene. 5 people were injured”.
