Ersin Demirci was the Erzurum Regional Representative of Zaman Newspaper, Turkey’s bestselling newspaper. Zaman Newspaper was shut down with a Decree-Law issued by the regime after July 15; it was allegedly related to the Hizmet Movement.

Mr Demirci’s wife, Mrs Hatice Demirci, got cancer during a hard time and died on October 18, 2018.

Ersin Demirci’s wife, Hatice Demirci, tried to make her husband be released even when she was ill. However, Hatice Demirci could not cope with the regime’s injustices, her relatives’ and friends’ social pressure, and thus she was diagnosed with cancer and died. The three children who lost their mothers had a hard time because their fathers were in prison. Although Mrs Demirci wanted her husband very much to be released from prison and be near her, her efforts did not result in, and she passed away, longing for her husband. 

Announcing this situation on his Twitter account, Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu, human rights defender and Member of Parliament from HDP, said, “Her husband is imprisoned, mother of 3 children; Hatice Demirci had colon cancer. In her last days, she tried hard to make her husband be released, but in vain… 3 children were left without a mother and became orphans. What a pity for our country to know that false trials cause all these..!”.

Zaman was the most circulated newspaper published in Turkish and English in Turkey. The newspaper was established with the suggestion of Mr Gulen. However, the regime deliberately shut it down to avoid the public getting the trustworthy news, instead of Erdogan’s media, which are sourced from the same table, by precisely the same highlights. The only aim is to support Erdogan rather than deliver the actual news to the public.
