Biography

Esra Cigci was a history teacher and lived a happy life with her husband and daughter before July 15. However, after the “coup theatre” staged by the regime, she died of cancer after being purged by the Decree-Law. Cigci’s death separated her 5-year-old daughter from both her mother and father because the father had to leave Turkey and seek asylum due to the threats of her mother-in-law.

Esra Cigci was a history teacher in a Hizmet related coaching centre in Istanbul. She experienced the anxiety and fear of arrest at any moment, every day and every minute, during the Tenkil process. As a result of this, she got cancer caused by intense stress. As if that wasn’t enough, her husband, brother and father-in-law were arrested a year later. Cigci’s health conditions got worse after this process, and she passed away on November 18, 2019.

Esra Cigci was a history teacher at Dudullu FEM, closed due to the alleged affiliation with the Hizmet movement. It was revealed that Esra Cigci had cancer in 2017 because of the distress she endured, her anxiety and the fear of arrest at any time. In 2018, the police raided her house early in the morning. Her husband, her brother and her father-in-law were arrested. All these caused Esra Cigci’s illness to worsen day by day.

Mr Cigli was released after some time; however, another arrest warrant was issued. He found the solution in hiding from the regime’s injustice trial. During this time, Mrs Cigci got worst and was hospitalised; nevertheless, Mr Cigli could not visit his wife in the hospital because he was wanted by the police everywhere. Esra Cigci passed away at midnight on November 18, 2019.

Esra Cigci died at the age of 28 and 4.5-year-old daughter behind. Her daughter is currently separated from both her mother and father because the father had to flee to Greece due to the threats of his mother-in-law.
