Engin Erol, who got cancer in prison and was not released until the last minute, lost his life. Erol, who was arrested during the Denomination investigations, was imprisoned for 2 years in Artvin Prison, 1 year and 3 months in Erzurum H-Type Prison. Erol, who was diagnosed to have cancer in prison, was made wait for going to doctor 3 months, his treatment was delayed likewise they did it to many others. Erol was released from prison extremely skinny while he had weighted 130 kilograms before he was jailed. He lost his life after the release which was made only a few days before his death.

Engin Erol, who was taken to the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital as his condition worsened and was released on December 10, 2019. Later, he died in another hospital in Samsun after the release. 

In this process, it turned out that Erol filed more than 20 request letters regarding his illness but were not taken into consideration. The eviction order given by the court where he was tried due to the clear reports about his illness was overturned upon the objection of the prosecutor’s office. He continued to be kept in prison until Erol entered the death process.

After Engin Erol was released at the stage of death and transferred to the hospital, he said to his relatives that “people are dying in the prison, there are two more people who are in my situation, please pray for them”. He gave the names of the paramedics and prison director who did not fulfill their responsibilities even though he had to be released due to his illness.

Erol’s last will was to continue the legal struggle regarding those responsible. His last words were that “the warden in Erzurum H type prison has changed few months ago, the new warden does not allow the heaters to be turned on. The conditions became worse after the coming of the new warden”. Another thing that upset Erol in difficult days was the condition of his wife. The wife of Erol who is suffering from vertigo disease, who was abroad due to work after July 15, was arrested when she returned to Turkey because of her approaching delivery. The funeral of Erol, who is married and has three children was performed in the family cemetery in the Sabuncular District after the Friday prayer in Rize Çayeli Old Mosque on 20.12.2019.
