Biography

While teaching in Sanliurfa, Aslan Durman was expelled by Decree-Law. He could not find any teaching job and started working in construction. He had a work accident due to the collapse in the building where he worked and unfortunately lost his life. Durman was fired without due trial over his alleged links to the Gulen group.

Aslan Durman was expelled from Hurriyet Primary School in Viransehir, Urfa, due to the Degree-Law: 686 under the Erdogan regime’s State of Emergency (OHAL). Duman could not find any other job and started working in construction. On April 14, 2019, he sadly died due to a work accident caused by the collapse of the building he was working on.

A 2-storey house under renovation allegedly collapsed while workers were working in Viransehir’s in the evening on April 15, 2019. The residents of the neighbourhood, who saw that the house collapsed with a loud noise, reported the situation to the rescue and health teams.

After arriving at the scene, rescuers and paramedics extracted the lifeless body of mould master Aslan Durman from beneath the rubble. Two other workers were critically hurt and were transferred to Viransehir State Hospital by ambulances. Their names were not disclosed. However, according to a statement released by the Education Union (Egitim Sen), Aslan Durman was a union member.

According to Sendika.org, Durman was one of the thousands of civil servants who were removed from their posts by a government decree issued on February 7, 2017, thanks to a state of emergency (OHAL) declared by the Turkish government in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016. “Our member Aslan Durman, who was wrongfully and unlawfully expelled under Decree-Law No. 686, died in a construction accident. His body was being held for autopsy at the Viransehir State Hospital. We wish patience to his family, education-science workers, and friends,” the statement elaborated.

Following the purge of Education Union member Durman, who had worked as a teacher for 14 years, the State of Emergency Procedures Investigation Commission investigated the application he filed while he was still alive. After Duman passed away, the commission had decided to return his right.

In a similar development in February 2018, a Turkish teacher, Gokhan Acikkollu, who was tortured to death while in police custody in the wake of the coup attempt over alleged membership in the Gülen movement, was found innocent one-and-a-half years later and “reinstated” to his job.
The principal delivered the official document for Acikkollu’s reinstatement of his former school to Açıkkollu’s wife, who had also been dismissed from her job as a teacher by a government decree.

In another incident, Mustafa Nacaroglu, an accountant fired from his job by a government decree due to his alleged links to the Gulen movement, was reinstated to his position one year after he died in a traffic accident January 2018.

Durman was not allowed to work in any school after being purged because, like everyone who was expelled by the Decree or was arrested with allegations of being a member of the Hizmet Movement, he was stigmatized as `Gulenist. A job cannot be given!’. Private business owners, schools, butchers or any other shop owners, who do not want to get into trouble with the regime, do not give any jobs to those under the regime’s radar for fear of confiscating their workplaces in Erdogan’s Turkey.
