It was alleged that Baki Pekiyi, Deputy Police Chief in Kirklareli, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol.
On July 18, 2016, the incident occurred at noon at the Sungur Mosque in Merkez Karakas District, Kirklareli. It was reported that a construction worker found the lifeless body of the father of two children, Deputy Police Chief Baki Pekiyi (40), in the toilet of the Sungur Mosque, where the wage earner came to use the bathroom before the noon prayer. After the controls of the police and medical teams, who were sent to the scene upon the notice of eyewitnesses, it was determined that Commissioner Pekiyi died. After the Kirklareli prosecutor’s examination at the scene, the dead body of the commissioner was first transferred to the Kirklareli State Hospital morgue and then to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy.
Eyewitness Recep Aras, a retired teacher, living in Karakas Neighbourhood, stated the following: “I came to the noon prayer, and we didn’t feel anything. Then, a wage earner went to the toilet of the mosque. He heard music from a cell phone in the toilet. When he opens the door, he sees the dead body of someone. But it was unclear when the incident took place. Later the prosecutor visited the place. We had entered the noon prayer. Then they took the body away.”.
Detailed information on the autopsy report and the cause of death could not be reached regarding the incident on the hot days of the July 15 so-called coup attempt. However, the allegations that Commissioner Pekiyi was depressed due to the coup accusation were reported in different media outlets.
