Biography

Colonel Ismail Gul, known for his Kemalist (*) ideology, was a ‘Cyprus veteran’. Unfortunately, like hundreds of thousands of Gulenists whose lives were darkened after July 15, Gul was also unfairly treated, and he was deprived of his rank with the Decree-Law. Despite being a patriotic colonel, he was deeply saddened by the terrorism accusation 20 years after his retirement. Gul’s rank was returned in the tomb after his death, but it was too late.

Mrs Gul said, “It was a huge error. This fallacy caused my husband’s death.” Colonel Gul, 20 years after his retirement, was expelled with the decree-law (KHK) issued under the state of emergency declared by the Erdogan regime after the coup attempt on July 15 on the grounds that he was related to the Gulen Movement. The reason for Ismail Gul’s purge was a downloaded mobile application called ByLock on the phone of his son, dentist Ahmet Gul. ByLock could be downloaded by anyone with a smartphone with internet, anywhere in the world; however, Erdogan and his long puppet arms based a mobile application to darken hundreds of thousands of lives, like patriot Mr Gul. During the Gul family’s challenging time, Mr Gul fell ill and died. Mr Gul’s rank was returned with another decree-law.

‘EVEN RETURNING FROM CYPRUS, HIS FACE WAS BETTER’

According to the news of Eyup Serbest from the Hurriyet newspaper, Sevinc Gul, Mr Gul’s wife of 47 years, elaborated about the painful days:

“It was an amazing summer. He was in and out of the sea, swimming all day. One night, a close relative of ours called and informed us about the list of those expelled by Decree-Law. I can’t describe how my husband’s face was. Even when he returned from the battle in Cyprus, I did not see his face like this. A big misstep was made, and this mistake caused my husband’s death. Ismail was a wonderful person. He was very attached to his family, as well as to the state. After this incident, he fell ill. My leg veins were also blocked. I was hospitalized for 20 days. He became a colonel in the grave where he was buried as an enlisted man. A big mistake was made.”

(*) Kemalism, also known as Ataturkism, is the founding ideology of the Republic of Turkey. Kemalism, as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk implemented it, was defined by sweeping political, social, cultural and religious reforms designed to separate the new Turkish state from its Ottoman predecessor and embrace a modernized lifestyle, including the establishment of secularism and state support of the sciences and free education, many of which were first introduced to Turkey during Ataturk’s presidency in his reforms.
