Serif Vatansever was born on February 25, 1975. Vatansever, a computer teacher and father of two, was most recently teaching at Yalova Industrial Vocational High School. With the decree-law enacted on September 1, 2016, he suffered injustice along with thousands of people and was expelled from his beloved profession. He was detained in Yalova on August 3, 2016 as part of a witch hunt launched under the name of Hizmet Movement investigations. He was also arrested on August 16, 2016. He was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison for allegedly being a member of the organization. He has been in Kocaeli No. 2 T-Type Prison for 4.5 years. He passed away on May 16, 2021 due to the coronavirus, which he contracted while staying in prison.
HE HAD NO CHRONIC DISEASE
Vatansever, who was expelled with the Decree-Law (KHK) issued on September 1, 2016, was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison for allegedly being a member of the organization. Vatansever, who has been in Kocaeli No. 2 T-Type Prison in Kandıra for 4.5 years, did not have any chronic diseases. According to his wife, he was perfectly healthy. However, he died on May 16, 2021, a month after contracting coronavirus in the ward.
The family of Şerif Vatansever, who was taken to Kocaeli SEKA Hospital on April 22, learned that his condition was serious, exactly 15 days later, on May 5, through their own efforts. Nazlı Vatansever, who called prison, always replied, “Don’t be afraid, he’s fine. They have it like the flu.” What did a young teacher without any chronic diseases go through in prison after contracting a virus? It is not yet known what violations he was subjected to. Why was he taken to the hospital a week later, although his test was positive on April 15th? Has he been given medication? There are many questions that have been left unanswered.
HE WAS TORTURED FOR 5 DAYS
The rights violations experienced by the young teacher are not limited to these. Şerif Vatansever was detained again on March 9, 2017, 7 months after he was arrested. He was released from prison and taken to the Yalova Police Department, where he was tortured for 5 days. Doctors Esengül Toymus Dogan, Ozkan Akar, and Arzu İsmailvelioglu examined Vatansever, who was taken to Yalova State Hospital 5 times on 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14 March, according to the documents reached by Bold Medya. They wrote a note on the patient’s report as “Beating or hitting by another person”. This official document has been saved in e-Nabız.
Expressing that her husband fell victim to injustices and negligence due to empty claims, Nazlı Vatansever answered Bold Media’s questions on May 18, 2021.
My condolences Ms. Nazlı, when was your husband arrested, what were the allegations about him?
On August 3, 2016, he was detained in Yalova. He was arrested on August 16, 2016. He has been in prison ever since. Even after he was arrested, they never left my husband alone. They detained him again and again. On March 9, 2017, 7 months after he was imprisoned, the Yalova police detained my husband for 5 more days with the decision of the prosecutor’s office. They were handed over to the prison again on the evening of Tuesday, March 14, 2017.
Why was he detained again?
There was a witness about him. On March 1, 2017, a witness statement was included in his file. They bothered hard with my husband. My husband is a very naive person, they thought he would talk and went too far. They didn’t realize that he didn’t really know anything. Later, 3 more witness statements were included in the file, but the judge did not accept their statements. They couldn’t even describe my husband. Despite this, my husband was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison for allegedly being a member of the organization. He was due to be granted probation next February.
What did the witness say?
He praised my husband so well… “Serif is a very good person, he is not malicious, he didn’t even have a pen-name, you must search for his superiors, I don’t know them.” he said and walked away. He didn’t tell much about himself, but the only sentence my husband said about that 5-day detention was: “Nazlı, I wanted to die, what are these people doing to us?”
Didn’t you ask him exactly what he was going through, didn’t he ever tell you? Was he tortured?
I then asked some of his friends, I know they were tormented. That’s all he said to me. My husband can’t be mad at anyone. He used to say to me, ”Nazlı, I love you very much, but I’m sorry if it happens, if my Lord is willing, I want to die here.” When my husband can’t express himself, he retreats to his corner. He prepared such beautiful defenses, but he preferred to shut up in the courts because they wouldn’t listen. He’s heartbroken. He recovered himself for our two children, and I did my best to recover him, but this illness, neglect and empty claims took my husband away.
Computer teacher Serif Vatansever was tortured while in detention for 5 days in Yalova. During the examination conducted at Yalova State Hospital on 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14 March 2017, it was officially recorded that he was tortured. The accounts of the deceased people on all online platforms such as e-government, e-Nabiz are being closed. Bold Medya reached the reports showing that Vatansever was battered just before these platforms were shut down.
When did you find out that your husband had contracted coronavirus?
April 15, 2021 was our visiting day. My Lord has shown him to us at least one last time. ”There is a disease in the ward, everyone has the flu,” he said. I asked him how he is feeling. ”It’s like the flu,” he said. Normally, my husband didn’t have a chronic illness. Born in February 1975, he was 46 years old. I don’t know that he ever got sick, he was a healthy person, but I don’t know what he had been living inside for 5 years. There was only one drug he used. Lustral. It was prescribed by a prison psychologist. It was a sedative he used to sleep at night. My husband’s ward friends who were evacuated said that the patients in Kandira were not taken to the doctor properly. My husband was having a hard time getting medicine and vitamins in prison. I always told him ‘Prescribe medicine, take vitamins, take care of yourself, take supplements’, but even if you wanted to buy it with your own money, they would not give it, if you begged, they would not give it. The situation was like this.
Your husband died on May 16th. When was the test result positive, when was he admitted to the hospital, when were you informed?
On the evening of April 15th, my husband’s PCR test was positive. He was taken to Kocaeli Seka State Hospital on April 22. I found out that he was in the hospital on the evening of May 5 by my own efforts. Previously, I called the prison twice a week. They always said, ”Those in A8 are getting over it like the flu, don’t worry.” I’m called by prison on May 6th. “Your husband is in a normal condition.” they said. I said that my husband is in the hospital, they replied, “How did you find out, we took him as a precaution”. As I found out later, my husband did not respond to treatment until April 29.
When was he admitted to intensive care? Did you get any information from the hospital, some of them don’t give.
I called the hospital on the morning of May 7, I met with a woman. “Some prisoners will be discharged today, let me check on your husband’s condition, I will inform you.” she said. Then that nurse called me back with such a sad tone of voice and said, “Call the hospital right now, beg your doctor, get information about your husband. Intensive care in our hospital has three stages. They admitted your husband directly to the 3rd intensive care unit. His condition is so severe that they put him there,” she said. Until May 10, I continuously called and they said, “The same as yesterday, keep your heart at ease. He was taken there as a precaution.”
Did you get a chance to talk to him?
We were able to talk on May 9. “I’m attached to two machines, I have a clot in my brain, the doctors are trying to open it, but I’ll be okay,” he said. After May 10, his measurements increased a lot. After that, his condition worsened. The doctor said, “He has an oxygen problem, his lungs are not working properly.” Because he was young and did not have any other disease, doctors were always hopeful, saying that he would “get over it”. They even said, “There are survivors from here.”
Then the body itself is intubated, the doctor said so. On Sunday, May 16, 2021, around 12.10, the doctor called and said “Your husband is in a very difficult situation. His measurements are not good at all. We are sending air with five times the pressure. His lungs are destroyed. If he’s not responding to this treatment, he may have another disease we don’t know about.” An hour later, they gave the news of his death. He surrendered his soul at 13:00 on Sunday. My husband always reads books in prison. He has read more than 1000 books. He felt very sorry for the people who died and what was done on the night of July 15. He was a very naive person.
