Mehmet Ali Basar was making his living as an accountant. After 15 July, he was arrested with fake and fabricated allegations and put in Silivri Prison in Istanbul. He was released after nine months, saying ‘sorry’. However, he was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer the hard time. He failed to respond to treatment and died.

Mehmet Ali Basar, an accountant in a law firm in Istanbul, was one of the hundreds of thousands of people arrested after the July 15 coup d’état in Turkey just because they were Gulenists or were allegedly Gulenists. Basar was detained for nine months in Silivri prison after being arrested with the allegation of “Gulenist Lawyer’s Safe” (means, he was allegedly keeping lawyers’ donations money for Hizmet’s charity activities). He was diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer in prison due to his hardships and length of time. After he was released from jail, his illness progressed while working as a labourer in daily jobs, such as construction or porter, and in harsh conditions to provide food for his family.

Basar was not allowed to work in any accountant firm after being released because, like everyone who was expelled by the Decree or was arrested with allegations of being a member of the Hizmet Movement, he was stigmatized as `Gulenist. A job cannot be given!’. Private business owners, who do not want to get into trouble with the regime, do not give jobs to those under the regime’s radar for fear of confiscating their workplaces in Erdogan’s Turkey.

After nine months of imprisonment, unemployment and fighting cancer for months, his body could no longer bear the burden and passed away. He left a tearful wife and three children behind.
