Biography

Police officer Kasim Sonmez, who was dismissed with a Decree-Law and left unemployed, lost his life in an attack by drug addicts on March 23, 2020. Sonmez. He was a police officer who wore the uniform of the Police department with honour for years. He was a person who was in love with his profession, dedicated, a role model and known for his honesty.

He was unjustly dismissed from his post as a result of the Decree-Law after July 15. As if this weren’t enough, Sonmez was also imprisoned, like tens of thousands of other victims, unjustly. Having gained his freedom after a long period of detention, Sonmez applied to a number of places but could not get a job because, like everyone who was expelled by the Decree or was arrested with allegations of being a member of the Hizmet Movement, he was stigmatized as `Gulenist. A job cannot be given!’. Private business owners, who do not want to get into trouble with the regime, do not give jobs to those under the regime’s radar for fear of confiscating their workplaces in Erdogan’s Turkey.

Kasim Sonmez opened a grocery store, saying, `Almighty is the one who provides livelihood, I can earn halal money even if I am not a policeman’. He was trying to maintain his family’s livelihood despite the difficult living conditions.

Sonmez was attacked by four people addicted to drugs in front of his house on March 23, 2020. As a result of the severe injuries he received, he was transferred to Dortyol State Hospital. Despite all the efforts, he could not be saved. A grieving wife and three children have left orphans behind.
