Biography

Ibrahim Halil Oruc, a 16-year-old who died as a result of a work-related accident in the southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakir, had to work because his father was purged from his post by a government decree in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016, the Arti Gercek news website reported on Tuesday.

Oruc was critically injured when an oil stove in his workplace in Diyarbakir caught fire and exploded. He had been forced to drop out his school due to financial problems his family began to experience after his father was fired from his job at the Diyarbakir Municipality.

More than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while more than 50,000 others were jailed, and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism since the coup attempt in Turkey under the pretext of an anti-coup fight.

Oruc lost his life on Jan. 26 at a hospital, where he received treatment for the injuries suffered in the explosion.

Tragedies caused by the government’s crackdown on regular citizens due to the coup attempt are frequent in Turkey and make their way into the reports of the human rights organizations.
