Marine Senior Staff Sergeant Esat Kalkan was a soldier who was serving in Afghanistan. He allegedly committed suicide in Afghanistan, where he was on duty. Kalkan was also purged from his profession with the Decree-Law issued on November 22, 2016, 3 months after death.
The appearance of the name of a deceased soldier in the latest state of the emergency decree on Tuesday raises suspicions that lists for the purges had been prepared in advance by the government.
The government issued yet another decree purging 15,000 more civil servants from positions in the early hours of Tuesday. The name of Esat Kalkan, Marine Senior Staff Sergeant, was also on the list of those expelled from the military, although he died in Afghanistan on Aug. 14, 2016.
The mayor of Ankara’s Mamak district, Mesut Akgul, posted a photo on Aug. 18 from a visit to the deceased soldier’s family to extend condolences.
The Turkish government has been undertaking the most massive purge in its history since a failed coup attempt on July 15. Described as a “great gift of God” by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the coup has served as a pretext for dismissing over 100,000 people and cracking down on dissent.
