Abdulvahit Tuncay, a police officer who suffered from cancer in prison and was not released until the last stage, died at 21.15 pm on May 1, 2021. Tuncay, who was arrested in October 2020 and sent to Tekirdag Type 1 Closed Prison, was sentenced to 25 years in prison as part of the investigations against the Gulen Movement. According to Sevinc Ozarslan from Bold Media, published immediately after Tuncay’s death; Abdulvahit Tuncay’s wife Songul Tuncay,  said: “They left my husband for  death. They didn’t even take him to the infirmary. He filed 25-30 petitions. They put him on the floor. The hospital board delayed his treatment. Although the cancer has spread all over the body, they did not release him until April 24. It had gone down from 70 kilograms to 50 kilograms. Despite stage 4 pancreatic cancer, cirrhosis and collecting water in his lungs, he was not released. We struggled for a month.” 

HE WROTE 25-30 PETITIONS:BUT HIS PETITIONS WERE NOT ANSWERED

Abdulvahit Tuncay, who was arrested two months after July 15, 2016, remained in Ankara Sincan and Kirikkale Keskin prisons for two years. He was later released  pending trial. Tuncay was arrested again in Tekirdag in October 2020 and got pancreatic cancer in prison. But he was not evacuated until the 4th stage. Tuncay also had cirrhosis. His lungs were full of water. For 4-5 months, he spent the morning on a chair in the ward until the morning. He wrote 25-30 petitions to get a doctor, none of them were answered. On March 24, when he called his wife Songul Tuncay, he said, “Come with the lawyer, save me, I’m dying, I’m sick.” After this phone call, his family became aware of the situation.

“I SIT  ON A CHAIR UNTIL THE MORNINGS FOR 4-5 MONTHS”

Songul Tuncay, who said that they had been trying to get her  husband released for a month, said: “The first time my husband called me, it was March 24 or 26. He said‘ ‘Come with the LAWYER, save me, I’m dying, I’m sick.’ We made our applications immediately, but we tried very hard. Even the chief medical officer at the hospital administration said, ‘Do you think you will get out of here alive?’ They will only sign one signature for the release, we have prepared all our documents, they are delaying that signature for 3 days. They always distracted us by saying that it’s not today, but tomorrow. He was tortured there.” .

“HE BEGGED FOR THREE DAYS, ‘OH, MY GOD, TAKE MY LIFE’”

Songul Tuncay continued: “I also stayed in the detention room. For three days my husband begged. ’Oh, my GOD, take my life, I can’t stand it’. And in the hospital, both me and my husband  were tortured like the same prisoner. He suffered a lot while in prison. He had said: ‘For 4-5 months I just sat on a chair until morning. I never went to bed, I couldn’t sleep, no matter how many times I petitioned, they didn’t take me to the infirmary, they didn’t take me to the doctor. They caused my illness to progress.’ He told me all this at the hospital after his release.” The funeral of Abdulvahit Tuncay, the father of 3 girls, was buried on May 2 in his village in the Beypazarı district of Ankara.
